Food Allergy Awareness for Back to School
|
|
Jaime Thompson is a Social Butterflies reader and mom of a preschooler with peanut and tree nut allergies. Here is what she would like to share with you and your family about your friends with food allergies. Thank you, Jaime.
Back to school is an exciting and anxious time for students and parents alike. Add a food allergy to the mix and many parents will spend time worrying if their child literally will survive the school day. It is estimated that 12 million Americans have food allergies, including 6-8% of the school aged population. Odds are your child will grow up with friends, neighbors, and classmates that have food allergies. One of the difficult challenges these people face, is that no preventative treatment currently exists. So people who have food allergies need to be vigilant about the foods they are near or ingest. Here are some helpful tips to start the school year off right and help keep food allergic kids (and friends) safe:
- Try using Sunbutter as a peanut butter alternative for school lunches.
- Teach your children not to share food with their friends and not to ask for a taste of their friends' foods.
